The Amazing Classic Malayalam Mohanlal film Spadikam

I’ve been on vacation out of the country for a couple of weeks, so I’m catching up on the films in theaters.  One of the films I brought with me on my iPad was Mohanlal’s Spadikam which is on ErosNow.  I love that ErosNow lets you download films now!

I loved the crazy action, but especially the intense family drama between Mohanlal and Thalikan, who plays his stern father.  Devasuram is still my favorite Mohanlal film, but this one is right up there.

The film is also readily available on Youtube.  Check out how crazy the first 10 minutes of the film are.  The viewer is just dropped into the action, with no initial clue as to who Mohanlal is fighting or why.

Thanks for the suggestions.! I know it’s not Mohanlal’s best work, but it’s a credit to him that he can elevate such a masala action film with his acting skills in the family drama parts.

I agree that Spadikam maybe isn’t the very best of Mohanlal – that is in movies like Sadayam, Nammuku Paarkan Munthirithoppukal and other but the charisma and bad-boy edginess exuded by Aadu Thoma is like…explosive. The action scenes are awesome. I also like his female lead Urvashi, who is instrumental in bringing him back to his past and reconciling him with his father. Not a trophy female.
Side note: Could you try watching Nammuku Paarkan Munthirithopukkal?

‘Aadu Thoma’ , the character played by Mohanlal in Spadikam is one of those eternal characters. The films like a good one. But like you said Devasuram is better. In fact it happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies. Try watching other Mohanlal classics. You won’t regret it.

In the movie , the father portrayed by Thilakan (not Thalikan) never once believed he has wronged his son until the final moments. In his belief he tried his best to mold his son into a great mathematician to keep up his legacy. But instead in his eyes his son was doing useless experiments and just fooling around. Seeing his efforts in vain he vent up his anger on his son. Instead of mending his way the son went on and choose the worst path possible and become a scoundrel and tarnished the father’s reputation and his legacy. Thus he considered his son a devil and named his lorry(like writing on his son’s forehead) SATAN.

Later during the final moments of the movie, when the father was left alone and his pride in shambles he reminisces about his past and realizes what he had actually done to his son and how has that affected the child’s mentality. He realized that he was the real tormentor and his son only needed his father’s acknowledgement for whatever he was. Thus as an act of redemption he renames his son’s vehicles as spadikam thus implying that his son was pure as a crystal and if only he were shown a proper light his life would had a different color.

The scene were the son stops his father from suicide and tells him that “Spadikam, this is enough for me.” shows he still has love and respect for his father and he only wanted his acceptance. This also reinforces the character of the son.

This is my interpretation of the Title’s aptness to the movie.

It is heartening to see this movie being admired in different parts of the world and its one of my all time favorites as well just for the sheer tenacity of emotions it brings.
